Wedding Wednesday: Creating a Unique Wedding Hashtag

hashtags

The wedding hashtag is becoming more and more popular. They are a great way to get your guests involved in sharing memories from your big day. But with this increasing popularity, when searching your hashtag, you might find other people’s pictures coming up. For example, when searching #MrandMrsJones over 7,000 posts show up on Instagram. Some might try to make it a little more specific by making it #MrandMrsJones2016 but when searching over 300 posts show up. It’s time to get more specific and creative with your hashtag choice!

We put together some examples of creative and unique hashtags that can almost guarantee you won’t have someone else’s wedding showing up when searching on Instagram! Some rhyming, date picking, name choosing and initials go a long way. For example… if the bride’s name is Layla Katz, and her soon to be husband’s name is Paul Johnson. Layla and Paul want a unique hashtag; that means #mrandmrsjohnson and #mrandmrsjohnson2016 are out. They’re getting married on October 11th, 2016. They have a few options…

#PaulandLayla10112016
#LaylaAndPaulHaveItAll
#PaulAndLaylaTieTheKnot
#PJandLKSpecialDay
#PaulandLaylaPartyOf2
#LaylaPaul2016

Our friends at Inside Weddings also have some great tips for creating your custom hashtag…

-Do you and your sweetheart have any special nicknames for each other? Nicknames from family and friends can also be a great way to add a personalized touch to your hashtag.

-Are you having a destination wedding? Your ceremony or reception site may inspire a memorable phrase.

-Puns can be fun, but only if it comes organically. If you have to force the joke, or it doesn’t make sense in the context of a wedding, it’s probably not the best choice.

-Alliteration always makes memorization easy for everyone!

-Did your friends come up with a sweet “couple name” for you and your sweetheart when you were first dating? That portmanteau finally has a purpose – your wedding hashtag!

-Rhymes are cute and offer a catchy way to make sure your guests remember how to tag their photos on social media.

-Did you use every tip on our list and every hashtag you tried was still already taken? Add your wedding year, or even the whole date!

-Remember to capitalize each word in your hashtag for maximum readability to make it easy on your guests.
