It’s spring in New York and love is in the air! We chatted with one of America’s most famous celebrity wedding planners and host of TV show “David Tutera: Unveiled” premiering late summer 2013.
Urban weddings are growing in popularity, and of course, what’s more fabulous of an urban setting than New York City. David Tutera gives his expert opinion on how to make a New York wedding top notch.
Q: What’s the biggest mistake brides and grooms to-be make when planning an urban wedding?
David: “Many couples do forget to embrace the unique aspects of a city wedding. For example, not all venues are large enough for both a ceremony and reception. In this case, you’ll need to factor in travel time (and traffic time) between these spaces. Parking also needs to be planned out – for guests and for vendors and remember to mind the garage’s hours of operation. In terms of your photos, if you are hoping for a garden-like backdrop in a metropolitan area, you’ll need to plan around parks and seasonal blooms – or better yet – work with the area and go with a cityscape! I love seeing engagement photos done in the couple’s neighborhood. Some other great location suggestions are the cobblestone streets of the Meat Packing District, in front of a great tagged wall with colorful graffiti and of course anywhere on the High Line.”
Q: Who are your go-to NYC wedding photographers?
David: “Maring Visuals is a top pick for both stills and video – I’ve been working with Charles & Jennifer Maring for years on some of my top clients.”
Q:If they sky was the limit, financially, what do you think is the most fabulous NYC wedding location?
David: “It really depends on the couple and their style, but I do a lot of work at the Plaza Hotel for more classic affairs. Gotham Hall is also gorgeous and I do a lot of work at Cipriani. I also did a ridiculous 3-story party at Skylight West. It’s more of a blank space and we transformed every level into a different environment for a different portion of the night – ending on the rooftop with spectacular views. With money being no object, you can be more creative too looking into the Highline Park, certain islands or even barge-like options for an out-of-the-box event.”
Q: What are some of your favorite wedding fashion trends of the moment?
David: “At the moment, I am all about lace. Lace used in unique ways – like creating a sheer cover over a plunging backline or high neckline. I am also loving color…pastels and even blacks, used in small doses or all over!”

Today’s designers are incorporating many variations of the fabric into modern styles giving brides many options to choose from! In terms of accessories, New York City brides are going for birdcage and Russian net veils or a simple side flower in their hair. High-end designer shoes such as Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, Valentino, and Giuseppe Zanotti are always in fashion with our brides.”
New York City is an exciting place to be in love, fall in love, and of course take your vows! Springtime brings the city buzzing with lovebirds, so New Yorkers, take a moment to smell the roses and appreciate the romance in your life and around you.
