Here Comes the Bride and Her Four-legged Friend

It’s not surprising that more and more couples are including their pets in their big day; after all they are “man’s best friend”. According to the July 2012 issue of bride’s magazine 4% of couples included their pets in the wedding party and we suspect that number will grow. While pets can be very cute (especially in a veil or tux) it’s important to consider these tips before bringing your furry friend down the aisle!

You should always check with the church or place you will be having the ceremony to confirm that pets are welcome. If there is a strict no pet policy you can always incorporate them into your wedding day photos. Notify your photographer in advance so they can start thinking of creative shots and fun ways to include your pet in the photos.

It’s also a good idea to hire a pet sitter for the day. This person will be able to bring your furry friend from your house to the ceremony, keep an eye on them and get them home safely at the end of the night. Prepare a bag that includes treats, toys, and food to ensure a happy pet.

Even the most well behaved and social pets can be frightened by large crowds and loud environments. Have realistic expectations of your pet and try not to stress out! If you are going to have your pet walk the rings down the aisle it’s a good idea to have mock rings and let your best man be in charge of the actual rings. If you plan on dressing your pet up be sure that the attire fits properly and doesn’t create discomfort. If your pet doesn’t usually wear clothing or accessories it’s a good idea to start dressing them up a few months prior to the wedding so they become used to wearing apparel.
